The Abbey became crown property after its suppression and was the place of confinement for poor Catherine Howard before her death. Her errant husband lay here overnight in his coffin while en route to Windsor.
The Duke of Somerset, Protector to the boy-king, Edward the Sixth, started building a house, the shell of which forms the present building.
By building a terrace, his enemies were able to accuse him of fortifying his house – and thus plotting against the Crown, which led to his execution in 1552.
